Mertesacker reveals how Arsenal 'double act' kept Costa quiet

If it does transpire that Arsenal's 2-1 FA Cup final victory over Chelsea was manager Arsene Wenger's final game in charge it will have been a memorable way to sign off.

Per Mertesacker has revealed that the Arsenal defence had a plan to stop Diego Costa during their FA Cup final win over Chelsea on Saturday (27 May).

Arsene Wenger has all-but signed his new contract ahead of the new campaign, but will the fans be able to accept his decision? I feel this club has special values and we have shown that.

"Now the most important thing is to give a correct evaluation for our season because, for me, it was incredible. Let's enjoy the win tonight and not worry about the future". "The best presentation? Watch the game [from Saturday]", he said.

"If Costa gets one in 90 minutes I've done my job", Holding said, as quoted by the London Evening Standard.

Nevertheless, Adams, speaking about what he describes as Wenger's refusal to take him back to the club, added: 'I'd been at the club 23 years and they treated me like that?

"We had an outstanding performance from the first minute onwards", the out-of-contract 67-year-old, who said his future will become clearer next week, said. It's not about popularity, it's about competence. You cannot be in this job. this job is basically trusting human beings, you know, so if you cannot forgive, you cannot trust.

For the first time in two decades the Gunners have not qualified for the Champions League and the spotlight, like never before, is being shone on the long-serving figure of Wenger and whether his time at Arsenal is up.

He described the criticism he had faced as a "disgrace" in a BBC interview broadcast prior to the final and returned to the theme after lifting the trophy.

"I don't know if I'm capable but I've done it for 15 years".

"I was in great form and it was a shame I didn't start the game".

The game's other big controversial moment came as Alexis Sanchez appeared to handle the ball in the build up to Arsenal's opener.

Chelsea were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Victor Moses was shown a second yellow card for diving inside the Arsenal area - but the newly-crowned Premier League champions would still find a way to equalise through Costa.

"We have the same idea of our future, the way we have to work together to improve the squad and the team".
