Amazon sweeps United States market for voice-controlled speakers

The screen and video calling also help Amazon set the Echo apart from Google Home.

It's basically the same as the speaker-like Echo, but with a screen that adds some new goodies.

The video and voice calling feature for the Echo Show uses Amazon's own calling service as opposed to integrating with a more common chat app. Called Echo Show, this device is now available for pre-order over at Amazon for $299.99. But the Echo Show is just listed as having "dual 2-inch stereo speakers", which is a little more vague. For the time being, you can buy two for $360 - so go in with a friend if you want to get in on those video calls. It's a smart idea to make the virtual assistant as accessible and ubiquitous as possible, but it remains to be seen if Amazon is over-extending itself with several high-priced hardware endeavors.

The Echo Show is available for pre-order from today for $229.99 in the USA (£220 in the United Kingdom and €240 in Germany) and will be shipped on June 28. A release for the United Kingdom and Germany is planned for a "later date", but Amazon has announced that the device would cost £219.99 in the United Kingdom and €239.99 in Germany when it's launched. The device is as of now, compatible with a range of other home products such as security cameras, baby monitors, and more.

It is essentially a bulky tablet - but powered by Alexa with the potential to tap into the smart home.

Still, many have struggled to catch up to Amazon.

The market for voice-assisted speakers is small, but growing.

The number of active US users will more than double for the devices this year, to 35.6 million, eMarketer said.

All of this is a turnabout for Amazon from a few years ago. The company built a full-fledged family of similar-yet-different devices in under a year.

Echo Show has eight microphones and beam-forming technology so it can hear you from across the room - even while music is playing. It is unclear if the new Echo device will have that functionality included.

"Alexa, show me the trailer for Rogue One". Its Amazon Fire phones did not make much of a splash, and its latest attempt is dependent on those without an Echo device downloading the Alexa app for iOS or Android. Amazon is offering a simple, hands-free way of calling family members who have bought into the same line of devices. But he declined to say whether Amazon meant to offer that capability. But, you can see many useful things on Echo's native screen. Milanesi said she was skeptical about whether Echo could supplant smartphones for voice calling. "Finding a reason to use Alexa for that is harder". However, they do give us a handful of examples for how this will work.
